SUPing...a load of rubbish

Get the lowdown on SUP Lass Adventures and how Caroline Dawson is battling rubbish in the most adventurous way!

Located on the edge of the Clwydian Range and Dee Valley AONB, SUP Lass Paddle Adventures (SLPA) was founded by Caroline Dawson, with the aim of offering stand up paddle (SUP) adventure experiences across North Wales and beyond.

SLPA specialises in making SUP adventures accessible, especially for women, and have worked with a broad range of client’s in all environments. Our USP is ‘SUP + More’….with the aim of delivering memorable paddle experiences rather than just basic sessions.

From day one, SLPA has been committed to the environment and have been considerate in the way the business has developed. Caroline has a degree in Environmental Science and has previously worked across the Agri Food Industry to implement sustainable business practices. Having grown up in rural North East Wales, she has a deep rooted connection with the River Dee, from swimming as a child in one of its many tributaries to becoming the first female Trustee of the Welsh Dee Trust.

SLPA is not a ‘fast fashion’ business, we have made an investment into high-quality kit and then made it work for a few seasons - we still have our original fleet of boards from three years ago. We associate ourselves with reputable and good-quality brands that reflect the ethos of our business. We are also supporters of local businesses  - clothing, food and drink, printing, etc - it may cost a little more but means we are giving something back to the area we operate in.

Caroline got involved with the Welsh Dee Trust almost two years ago and since then has been regularly delivering #itshoudntbeinthedee SUP litter picks on the mid and lower sections of the River Dee. As a Trustee she has supported the wider promotion of the charity and its work amongst recreational users. Along with litter picks, the Trust trains citizen scientists to undertake water quality testing and vertebrae monitoring, it also provides advice and support to farmers to help better manage agricultural runoff. The trust is always on the lookout for new supporters and volunteers, please visit their website to learn more: https://www.welshdeetrust.com/

Along with being involved with the Trust, Caroline is a Leave No Trace Trainer, and when out on her paddle adventures she actively promotes the 7 Leave No Trace Principles with her clients. Where Caroline can she tries to leave a positive trace. She is also an accredited WiSe Wildlife Safe Operator, which means she has undertaken training to help better understand the interactions of water-based activities with wildlife - a course she can’t recommend highly enough. This summer SLPA has been involved with the distribution of North Wales Wildlife Trust invasive species kits - over 40 kits have been distributed. Caroline also undertook invasive species training with the team in Maeshafn to learn more about the threats on the Dee, where Himalayan Balsam and Chinese Mitten Crabs are already well established. Caroline recently volunteered for a day as a pacesetter for the recent One Planet Patrol #raceforrivers initiative with Lizzie Carr  - 641km over 28 days testing water quality. She led volunteers on day 28 across Cheshire. There is rumour of a Welsh version in 2024!!

Being environmentally conscious has never been a chore, as it is what we stand for off the water too. Just a few simple things can make a big difference to the waterways we paddle, plus help inspire others too. - Caz Dawson
