BECOME A COACH

Canoe Wales in association with British Canoeing provides a range of coaching qualifications aimed at everyone from club paddlers and novices to advanced paddlers in a range of disciplines.

Below is an overview of each award. You can start at either Paddlesport Activity Assistant, Paddlesport Instructor or Coach. It all depends on what you want to coach and which environment you wish to coach in .

Coaching qualifications

Paddlesport Activity Assistant
A club based award design for clubs to be able to identify its needs, train and assesses members based on the needs of the club. The award is for use in sheltered water environments.

Paddlesport Instructor
This award is for paddlers wishing to coach novices and mainly deliver introductory sessions. The award is for use on sheltered water.

Coach
This award is for paddlers looking at delivering a series of sessions and improving the performance of their athletes or clients. There are eighteen different pathways with this award delivering sessions in either sheltered, moderate or advanced water environments.

Performance Coach

Develops on the progressive coaching skills gained in previous awards and trains the coach to plan, deliver and review long term coaching programmes. This is usually over a 12 month period.

  • 4 days
  • Trained and assessed on course
Coach

  • 2 days of core training
  • 2 days of discipline specific training
  • Training and preparation
  • 1 day assessment
Performance Coach

  • 3 days of core training
  • 2 days of discipline specific training
  • Training and preparation
  • 1 day assessment
