Challenges and new environments for the next generation

Last week saw 14 strong Junior North Wales paddlers from Mold to Llanberis; ranging in ages from eight through to eighteen take on two weeks of intense training and competitions in Scotland.

The training camp started up at Pinkston Watersports, Glasgow, which is the only artificial White Water course in Scotland, giving the youngsters an awesome opportunity to train through to the evening in new, challenging conditions.

Saturday and Sunday were both race days up at Pinkston Watersports with all the paddlers gaining very respectable results in a highly competitive environment.

Lorelei Kennan and Lara Alcock both raced exceptionally well, with Lorelei coming 1st and Lara 4th on Saturday; and then Laura coming 1st and Lorelei 3rd on the Sunday.

Later on Sunday evening, after racing, there was short drive up to Grandtully Slalom which is held on the River Tay, between the villages of Grandtully and Strathtay, which is where the paddlers enjoyed another 5 days of excellent training. Then back to another two days of racing, this time on a natural river.

Over the weekend all the paddlers raced exceptionally well, with Lorelei gaining another 1st place and Lara 2nd on the Saturday and then on the Sunday, Lorelei was piped at the post for 1st place by a fellow Welsh paddler, Leisa Thomas, from Llandysull, and Lara still making it to 4th place. I truly exciting race, that had us all on the edge of our seats!

The paddlers then had a choice to either have just over a week of further training and stay up in Scotland or return home for a well earned rest.

The 3rd and final race was held back up in Grandtully, once again all the paddlers raced extremely well, with Oli Snowden coming 3rd on both days of the weekend.

A fantastic effort from all who raced and trained, it's has been great to see their skills devlop and each of our competitors shine!

We're looking forward to seeing what progress can be made in the next of our junior camps.

Apart from the obvious kit such as a buoyancy aid/personal flotation device, paddle and paddlecraft(!), what should you carry with you on the water? It can be tricky knowing what to take, and how to carry it on your boat/board. Here are some suggestions to help make sure you have the right kit to hand when you need it.
