It's not all work and no play for the Canoe Wales Slalom Team

Week 4

The final week of the canoe slalom summer trip took the whole team to Bourg St Maurice, famous for the hundreds of ski runs looking down on it. A stunning location for the team to once again kickback, holiday and of course train hard and learn new skills on another new slalom course for many of the squad.

Bourg St. Maurie Canoe Slalom Course Repaired

The last time the squad were here in 2019 there were infamous landslides that not only destroyed the road mere hours before the Tour de France was set to ride through but also destroyed the canoe slalom course.

After lots of hard work from the locals, the national slalom course has been restored although more work is still needed to bring back the full glory to the upper sections (international site).

Within the performance programme, we believe enjoying the journey is the only way to success, so on top of 2 slalom sessions each day we put on river runs each afternoon/ evening of the trip to help build white water skills and confidence playing around on new dynamic water. It also gave some of the more experienced performance paddlers the opportunity to lead their fellow teammates down new stretches of white water.

After another full-on week of training and holiday, it was time to wrap up the week of training and head back to the UK. Next up for the Performance Squad is a month of training before the second half of the UK racing season begins in September.

For the talent, a quick few days to reset at home before even more races and a trip to Grandtully, Scotland for more racing.

Canoe Wales Performance Coaches on the river

Even our Canoe Wales Performance Coaches get to enjoy some time travelling on the river with the team, as they say farewell to the fabulous Thomas Power for Leading the team for the past few years.

He will be missed as he goes on to a new adventure in teaching!

All the best Tommy!
