Join the Team at Canoe Wales - Performance Manager Vacancy

Neil Kinnerly • Jun 30, 2022

Exciting opportunities here at Canoe Wales as we have a new vacancy to join the ever expanding team  and help shape the future of paddlesport in Wales. Take a look below:

Performance Manager

Job Type: Permanent full-time (25-35 hours per week)

Salary: £30 - 36k per annum (pro rata)

Location: Fully Flexible; preferably in Wales but suitably qualified candidates willing to travel to Wales will be considered.

Start Date: ASAP (negotiable)

Canoe Wales has an exciting opportunity for a Performance Manager to lead our Performance and Talent Pathway in Wales.

Following a detailed review in 2021, we’ve been busy restructuring our performance programme. We’re providing more accessible opportunities for those who would like to be part of our pathway, increasing the sport science support we provide to our athletes and we’re working with a leading sports analytic company and Sport Wales to develop the performance and welfare of those on the programme.

It's a really exciting time to join the team and lead one of the most successful performance programmes in Wales and you will be responsible for implementing our strategy to get more Welsh athletes into GB sprint, slalom and paracanoe programmes.

We’re looking for an inspiring leader with a strategic mindset and innovative approach to performance management. You need to be structured and organised and have excellent communication and people skills - building good relationships with staff, athletes, parents, clubs and coaches, but also not shying away from difficult conversations when these are necessary. And you will be comfortable with finances, as you will have responsibility for managing the programme’s budget in a challenging funding environment.

While this role is advertised as full-time (5 days a week), we would be open to discuss other options (3 to 4 days a week) with admin support. While it’s a busy role with weekend commitments, we offer a flexible working policy where you can fit the role around any other work of family responsibilities.

You have the option to work from home or from one of our offices at Plas-y-Brenin, Capel Curig or the National White-Water Centre near Bala. Inevitably, you will spend a lot of time out and about, supporting your staff, meeting our athletes and their families and attending competitions and training camps. Although an understanding of performance paddlesport would be beneficial, what matters most is your ability to bring inspiring leadership to a talented team.

We also strongly encourage women and other people who are underrepresented in paddlesport and performance management to apply.

Full details of the role can be found in the job description below. If any interested candidates have further questions, you are welcome to contact alistair.dickson@canoewales.com for an informal conversation about the role.

Apart from the obvious kit such as a buoyancy aid/personal flotation device, paddle and paddlecraft(!), what should you carry with you on the water? It can be tricky knowing what to take, and how to carry it on your boat/board. Here are some suggestions to help make sure you have the right kit to hand when you need it.
