To advocate for improved access and increased outdoor education opportunities for young people in Wales!

Canoe Wales meet Sam Rowlands MS at the National White Water Centre and advocate for improved access and increased outdoor education opportunities for young people

Canoe Wales welcomed North Wales member of the Senedd Sam Rowlands to the National White Water Centre last week and highlighted the unresolved challenges in access whilst helping him develop his Bill for increased outdoor education opportunities for young people in Wales.

Sam Rowlands MS represents the North Wales region in the Senedd. He is known for being successful last year in the first round of getting a private members Bill approved by the Senedd which aims to develop opportunities for young people to experience residential outdoor education opportunities.

The Outdoor Education (Wales) Bill would seek to make it a statutory obligation for local authority-run and grant aided schools in Wales to be providing funding to ensure the opportunity for at least one week of residential outdoor education for young people at some stage during their school years.

Canoe Wales has supported this proposal and are keen to see that future generations have the opportunity to experience a variety of activities, outside, in our natural environment.  We discussed the Bill with Sam and supported him with its development.

We also used the opportunity to tell Sam about the work that goes into the development of young paddlers and how we keep them engaged with the outdoor environment. We also explained the importance of sites like the National White Water Centre, Tryweryn in developing outdoor opportunities for young people and the role that it plays in developing skills of paddlers in all disciplines whether they are recreational or competitive.

Sam was also keen to hear of the issues that some face getting access and is a supporter of increasing access opportunities to both land and water. He agreed that you can’t love and appreciate an environment that you can’t access so we look forward to Sam taking this insight back to the Senedd.

To end the visit Sam (front left of the raft) was given the chance to experience the fun of getting on to the water with an impromptu raft trip down the top section of the Tryweryn. He certainly enjoyed the experience and said there was no better way to get himself ready for a following Finance and Risk Management Committee meeting which he left NWWC to join!

Not everyone knows that they have five Members of the Welsh Parliament who represent them, one Member of the Welsh Parliament who represents their constituency and four who represent their region.  If you support the Outdoor Education Bill, you can contact your MSs and ask them to support it too - we need 31 supporters for it to pass and become law.  You can use your postcode to find your five Welsh Parliament Members and write to them by visiting writetothem.com

And don't forget to click the button below to tell Sam if you too are backing the bill.

Apart from the obvious kit such as a buoyancy aid/personal flotation device, paddle and paddlecraft(!), what should you carry with you on the water? It can be tricky knowing what to take, and how to carry it on your boat/board. Here are some suggestions to help make sure you have the right kit to hand when you need it.
