River Dee - Further Works in Llangollen

Canoe Wales • Sep 20, 2021

As part of the LIFE Dee River project, Natural Resources Wales recently completed work on the Corn Mill weir in Llangollen to improve upstream and downstream fish passage, and will be carrying out further work on the lower weir downstream from Monday 20 September 2021.

We've received the following update from Natural Resources Wales:

"All work on the top site (Corn Mill Weir) in Llangollen has now been completed as planned and the contractors are now out of the river. Many thanks for your cooperation during this works.

Further to this, there will be work starting on the lower weir (downstream of Town Falls, Lower Mill carpark) starting week commencing 20th September. This work will include work on the weir itself, and also construction of the replacement kayak/raft egress ramp. The in-river work is expected to last for 1 week, with the work on the egress ramp expected to last for a further 3 weeks, if there are any changes we will continue to update you. During this period, the current egress point will be unavailable; however we will be removing 3 trees that are overhanging the river (strainers) downstream of the current egress point on river-left to allow safe egress downstream of the usual point. The site compound will limit access to the usual ramp into the car park; however there will be access up the ramp at the eastern end of the car park for rafts/kayaks. A car parking space will be kept clear at the top of this ramp to ensure rafts have sufficient room to exit.

There will be banksmen in the river upstream of the works during the in-river element of the project. We would kindly ask rafters/kayakers to follow their directions once you are below Town Falls to ensure everyone's safety. There will be a highly visible banner across the river above head height outlining the work area."
