New Coaching & Development Manager, Pete Catterall, starting March 2022

Neil Kinnerly • Dec 16, 2021

We're delighted to announce that Canoe Wales has successfully recruited Pete Catterall as our new Coaching & Development Manager to manage our coaching scheme and development programmes, develop initiatives to get more people on the water in Wales, and help ensure a sustainable future for the organisation.

Pete will be taking on this role from 7 March 2022. Bringing 30 years of experience of paddlesport coaching and 20 years of coach education to Canoe Wales, Pete was also Head of Paddlesport & Mountain Biking at Plas y Brenin national outdoor centre for almost 17 years. He is currently working for British Canoeing as the Talent Coach Developer, supporting the top coaches for Sprint and Slalom with coach development plans and CPD.

Living in Penmachno in North Wales, Pete is well known within the Welsh paddling community. He is one of the few coaches with experience and qualifications across pretty much all of the paddling disciplines.

As the national governing body for paddlesport in Wales, Canoe Wales operates as a Delivery Centre for British Canoeing Awarding Body (BCAB) qualifications and awards in Wales, and Pete's role will be to ensure effective implementation of the scheme; making sure Canoe Wales is compliant and have the appropriate number of providers in Wales who are delivering courses effectively and safely, and that we maintain a supportive and open communication system with all partners who deliver the scheme.

As the new Coaching & Development Manager, Pete will also oversee the work of the Development Team, and the delivery of Canoe Wales programmes and initiatives designed to get more people on the water and experiencing paddlesport for the first time. He will be managing our support to clubs and other affiliates, ensuring they are supported with safeguarding, governance and insight to be more effective in what they do.

After accepting the appointment, Pete commented:

"It's a great time to be in paddlesport, and I'm really excited and honoured to be taking on this role with the team at Canoe Wales. Having lived and worked in Wales for over 20 years, I see the huge potential we have to develop paddlesport due to the amazing locations we have on our doorstep. Being able to be part of the future of Welsh paddling and work with the coaches, leaders and clubs that drive the sport forwards is really exciting."

The Canoe Wales Staff Team is looking forward to working with Pete from March next year. Our CEO Alistair Dickson commented:

"We’re really pleased to have attracted someone of Pete’s calibre to Canoe Wales and excited about what he will bring to the organisation. His extensive skills and experience will undoubtedly help us to further develop the coaching scheme in Wales, whilst also supporting the development of paddling in Wales more generally.

We would also like to take this opportunity to thank Paul Marshall for the work he has done with the organisation over the last 4 years, managing the coaching scheme as a contractor. The scheme is in a really good place thanks to his hard work and dedication and we wish him all the best for the future."

Apart from the obvious kit such as a buoyancy aid/personal flotation device, paddle and paddlecraft(!), what should you carry with you on the water? It can be tricky knowing what to take, and how to carry it on your boat/board. Here are some suggestions to help make sure you have the right kit to hand when you need it.
