If you’re planning to travel within - or to - Wales to go paddling, please be aware that many parts of Wales are currently subject to a local lockdown with travel restrictions in place.
As of 12 October 2020, the following council areas are subject to a local lockdown:
- Conwy
- Denbighshire
- Flintshire
- Wrexham
- Blaenau Gwent
- Bridgend
- Caerphilly
- Cardiff
- Merthyr Tydfil
- Neath Port Talbot
- Newport
- Rhondda Cynon Taf
- Swansea
- Torfaen
- Vale of Glamorgan
- Bangor (town)
- Llanelli (town)
If you live in one of these areas, you can continue to go paddling within your council area, but you cannot leave the council area to go paddling.
If you live outside of a lockdown area – including paddlers travelling from England - this means you cannot travel to any of these council areas to go paddling. Only residents of the council area may paddle within the borders of that council area. For example, Llangollen is located within Denbighshire which is a lockdown area. This means that paddlers who live in Denbighshire can go paddling in Llangollen, but you cannot travel to Llangollen from outside of the area to go paddling.
There are a few exceptions in place, which include:
- Travel for work – so if you work in one of these council areas or are attending an event for work (such as a required training course)
- Elite athletes, who must be designated as an elite athlete by Sport Wales.
Canoe Wales has also suspended the arrangements that had been put in place for close contact training courses to resume in each of these local lockdown areas. We have sent all providers in Wales advice about which courses can continue to run in which areas for which participants and we have updated our
COVID-19 FAQs
with more information, but if you need further advice or if you are an English provider planning to run a course in Wales please get in touch for additional advice.
If you have any specific questions about what these travel restrictions might mean for you and your paddling plans, you can contact us at

for advice and support, or visit the
Welsh Government website
for more information about local lockdowns. This is obviously a really frustrating situation, but we want to do everything we can to keep you paddling in your local area if you’ve been affected by a local lockdown, so please do get in touch if you need any help.
