Safety Alert: Paddling in a Thunderstorm

Dros y dyddiau nesaf rhagwelir stormydd melt a tharanau ar draws llawer o’r DU.

Mae rhagolygon wedi bod y bydd eu hymddangosiad yn anrhagweladwy a allai olygu bod rhai padlwyr yn cael eu hunain yng nghanol storm.

Cefndir i ergydion mellt

Mae mellt yn taro’r ddaear ym Mhrydain tua 300,000 o weithiau’r flwyddyn. I unrhyw un yn yr awyr agored, mae hwn yn risg y mae’n rhaid ei ystyried. Er nad oes amddiffyniad llwyr rhag mellt, gellir cymryd camau i leihau’r risg o anaf. Mae 30-60 o bobl yn cael eu taro gan fellten bob blwyddyn ym Mhrydain, ac ar gyfartaledd, mae 3 (5-10%) o’r streiciau hyn yn angheuol.

Os cewch eich dal mewn storm rydym yn cynghori’r canlynol:-

  • Ceisiwch loches mewn adeilad neu gerbyd os yn bosibl.
  • Os ydych ar ddŵr, ewch i’r lan/ymyl ac i ffwrdd o’r dŵr cyn gynted â phosibl gan y bydd dŵr yn trosglwyddo trawiadau o ymhellach i ffwrdd.
  • Gadewch eich padlau a’ch cwch a gwarchodwch eich hun.
  • Os ydych chi’n dod i gysylltiad â’r elfennau heb unrhyw le i gysgodi, gwnewch eich hun yn darged mor fach â phosibl trwy gyrcydu gyda’ch traed gyda'i gilydd, dwylo ar eich pen-gliniau a’ch pen yn dynn at eich corff. Mae’r dechneg hon yn cadw cymaint ohonoch oddi ar y ddaear â phosibl.
  • Peidiwch â chysgodi o dan goed tal neu ynysig, amcangyfrifwyd bod un o bob pedwar o bobl sy’n cael eu taro gan fellten yn cysgodi o dan goed.

Safety Alert: Paddling in a Thunderstorm

Background to lightening strikes

Lightning strikes the ground in Britain about 300,000 times a year. For anyone outdoors, this is a risk that must be considered. Although there is no absolute protection from lightning, measures can be taken to reduce the risk of injury. 30-60 people are struck by lightning each year in Britain, and on average, 3 (5-10%) of these strikes are fatal.

If you are caught in a storm we advise the following: -

  • Seek shelter in a building or vehicle if possible
  • If you are on water, get to the shore/bank and away from the water as quickly as possible as water will transmit strikes from further away.
  • Leave your paddles and boat and protect yourself
  • If you are exposed to the elements with nowhere to shelter, make yourself as small a target as possible by crouching down with your feet together, hands on knees and your head tucked in. This technique keeps as much of you off the ground as possible.
  • Do not shelter beneath tall or isolated trees, it has been estimated that one in four people struck by lightning are sheltering under trees.

This guidance is based on research by RoSPA. Further information and guidance from RoSPA can be found here https://www.rospa.com/leisure-safety/advice/lightning/

Help us to protect the places we love to paddle from plastic and other litter by organising or taking part in a paddle clean-up This year we are hoping to further encourage access to blue spaces and we want more of you to enjoy the many benefits of being out on the water; but our waterways are in crisis from all kinds of pollution. Our campaign in 2022/23 saw 50 clubs and group requests free ‘Litter Picking Kits’, nearly 60km of rivers, banks and shore line being cleared and as much as 204 bags of rubbish were collected in Wales alone! So it's clear that as paddlers, we can make a real difference to our blue spaces as we can access those hard to reach spots and remove litter and other rubbish from our waterways. Making it a better environment for everyone and it certainly helps kick those January blues by doing something good if you would like to start early.
