MEMBERSHIP FAQs

Want some more information about membership? Check out our Frequently Asked Questions below to see if we've already got the answers you're looking for.

Why do I need a navigation licence?

A navigation licence is required to paddle on any of the 4500km of canals and waterways throughout the UK managed by the Canal and River Trust or the Environment Agency. This includes the Llangollen Canal, the Montgomery Canal, the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal, and the Swansea Canal. Your Canoe Wales membership provides incredible value over purchasing your navigation licences direct from the Canal and River Trust or the Environment Agency.

You should note that some other waterways (including lakes) may have a separate fee structure in place. Visit the Canal and River Trust or the Environment Agency websites to find out more about the waterways included in your licence.

Do I really need third party insurance?

Third party insurance provides important protection were you to cause injury to another waterway user or damage to property, including other boats, buildings, docks, signage, etc. This could occur if you were to accidentally lose control of your boat. If you do not have third party insurance and you are involved in an accident while paddling, you could be held liable for any injury or damage you cause.

Check out our insurance page for more information about the insurance we provide to our members.

Can anyone join Canoe Wales?

To join Canoe Wales you need to live in Wales.

Which membership type do I need?

Coaches and competitors join as comprehensive members, which lets them hold coaching qualifications and compete in ranking competitions. Most other paddlers join as basic members (which gives you third party liability insurance). Only paddlers who live in Wales can join as comprehensive or basic members.

What if I live in England?

If you want the benefits of full federal membership, you'll need to join British Canoeing.
