In a medium flow this is a pleasant beginners’ river which keeps its level for a good few days after heavy rain. However, it is best avoided in full flood.

Roman fort bridge to Irfon confluence

5 km class II; one possible portage

The A483 road crosses the river a few kilometres west of Garth. This is a convenient access point and the bridge even has seats built into it GR926504. The river is an excellent alternative start to the lower Irfon, or it can be paddled as a short trip in its own right. Paddle this water in a small group and you will see kingfisher, amongst other wildlife. At Dol-y-Gaer there is a piped bridge spanning the river, which is quite fun to plop through in a medium spate. However, in bigger water, this will almost certainly need to be portaged with care. There are a few, slightly bigger drops that just about hit the grade II mark as you enter Llangammarch Wells. There is excellent egress onto a small road that parallels the Irfon just below the confluence. Either finish here, GR934472, or continue down at grade II
