Afon L’Eri Nearby Rivers: West Coast and Machynlleth
A beautiful hidden gorge - fantastic for the grade. Tal y Bont to Glanwern footbridge 4.5 km grade II; one weir
Tal y Bont is about 20 kilometres south of Machynlleth. It is a little hard to gain access to the river or get changed in Tal y Bont. The best approach may be to change out of the village and then drive in to opposite the pub where, by following the footpaths into the forest on the north of the river, it is possible to make your way down to the water’s edge GR648890. This is well below two houses and a little footbridge! If you do manage to get on above this, there is at least one unpleasant-looking weir! From here down, the water rushes through a class II(+) gorge on its way to the sea. Trees are the only potential hazard but, normally, the passage is clear. As you reach the first caravan park, there is an obvious weir with boxed-in sides. This is fine to shoot in medium water, though you should check it out on the day. Egress in Penybont is not easy, so it is best to continue down to the Glanwern footbridge and egress river left onto the public footpath by the caravan park. I have not paddled this last kilometre of water, but there shouldn’t be any unpleasantries down here GR726782. The Tidal Leri Tidal Distance 6km. This estuary is insignificant and of limited interest to canoeists. However, limited white-water sometimes occurs on the ebb at the tide gates GR616931. |
