A steep, outrageous and dangerous mountain stream flowing downhill at a rate of knots into Lake Vyrnwy. Not particularly appealing, but you may want a look. Y Gadfa to Pont Eunant 3 km class V to VI; various portages
There are a few paddleable tributaries of Lake Vyrnwy, though I have only ventured onto one of them. They are all fairly radical and include various portages. If you continue up the fantastic Afon Twrch, which drains into the southern end of Bala Lake, it is possible to take a small mountain road which leads down towards Llyn Efyrnwy GR938237. The stream can be seen raging alongside. The day after flood seems the best level as in full ‘go’ it would be even more frightening. Set off downstream where you will be faced with myriad drops, squirts, shakes and shoots to attempt to negotiate. At time of paddling, two fences and about five unpleasant drops were portaged. Egress in the lake GR963223, or well before if you have had enough. |
