Talwrn Bridge to Llansantffraid-ym-Mechain 8 km grade I; various portages From the A490 Welshpool to Llanfyllin road, it is possible to turn up the B4393 and take the first turn left, which leads to a little bridge crossing the flow GR174192. It is totally inappropriate, in my opinion, to paddle this river in flood or high water conditions! A few days after rain, or when the boat will easily float but you would be happy to wade or swim across the small stream with impunity, is the time to launch if you have to. Weave and turn, portaging the odd tree, fence and two low horse jumps (Bodynfoel Hall runs horse trials several times a year) on your way to the first village. Pass Llanfechain and the towers at Brongain, and continue bobbing and weaving, cursing and snarling! Under a small brick bridge and, thankfully after only one further bridge, escape onto the road GR202208 is possible. If you are a sucker for punishment like me, then the B4393 road bridge and its small following weir are next, before passing under the A495 where you eventually reach a white footbridge GR222199 and can escape to the car park in town, get changed and go to the pub. |
