Notes:

Trees are a nuisance

Quality:

The Dulais is an excellent river full of surprises not seen from the road. Good fun can be had a few days after rain water. The trees can be a bit of a nuisance, but all portages are easy and do not detract from a great little paddle.

Hafod Bridge to Llanwrda

6 km grade III

Take the A482 Lampeter road which follows the river through a wooded valley. Access can be made at the fifth crossing of the river which is just below the actual Hafod bridge GR698356. There should be ample water at the get-in for easy passage around the rock-strewn river bed. In flood the river becomes dangerous because of the tree hazard. A small grade II to III gorge just below the bridge gives a feel of this paddle. Grade II rapids, interspersed with grade III-type gorge enclosed drops, follow, and this is the essence of the river nearly all the way to Llanwrda. Two trees required portaging at time of writing and there were two fences that needed careful negotiating.

Egress is best by the War Memorial on river right, though some will want to shoot the small weir in Llanwrda and clamber out below. If you do, you should ask permission before clambering over any gardens to egress! GR713317.
