Transferring Assessor and Provider Statuses

As a provider or assessor of awards in the old scheme, you may be required to do some additional training or orientation to familiarise yourself with the new awards before you are able to provide them. Some awards are vastly different in both content and remit compared to the old scheme awards of the same name, so may require a greater level of qualification in order to provide it. This page aims to help you to understand what you are now eligible to provide and what you need to do in order to do so; and where appropriate we will also explain why you can no longer provide awards of certain title.

I was a Canoe Safety Test Provider

The CST has been replaced by the Foundation Safety and Rescue Training (FSRT) course, which involves basic flatwater safety theory and techniques appropriate to both canoe and kayak (click on the link to find out more and read the FSRT syllabus). It is therefore required that FSRT providers hold at least 3 star in both canoe and kayak. Prior to the end of 2009, it was possible for CST providers who met this requirement to register to provide the FSRT without further training; however, the process of becoming an FSRT provider is now the same for all coaches who meet the pre-requisites (a minimum of old scheme BCU Level 3 coach with alternative 3 star; or a BCU UKCC Level 2 who has been qualified for at least 3 years). To find out more about becoming an FSRT provider, click here.

I was a White Water Safety & Rescue Provider

There are now two levels of white water safety and rescue training provided by the BCU; basic and advanced. Prior to the end of 2009, it was possible for active old scheme WWS&R providers to go through a one day orientation course in order to provide the new basic BCU White Water Safety and Rescue course. Only those providers who demonstrated the required standard of knowledge and delivery ability would leave the day able to provide; others were given action plans. It is now required that all coaches wishing to provide the new WWS&R follow the process described here. If you are a Level 5 coach and WWS&R provider and are interested in providing the new Advanced White Water Safety and Rescue, please click here to find out how.

I had A1 assessor status

An A1 assessor could assist old the old Level 1 coach training and assessment courses for the discipline in which the assessor stator was held. The new Level 1 training and assessment course is not discipline specific and as such, providers must be experienced in both single-bladed and double-bladed craft. The process to become a tutor for the new Level 1 and Level 2 coaching courses is explained on this page.

Depending on the level of coaching award you hold, you can register to provide the Paddlepower awards and the new 1, 2 and 3 star awards. Just complete this star award assessor registration form and return to the Canoe Wales office with any evidence of awards / first aid as required.

I had A1* assessor status

An A1* assessor could assist old the old Level 1 coach training and assessment courses for the discipline in which the assessor stator was held. The new Level 1 training and assessment course is not discipline specific and as such, providers must be experienced in both single-bladed and double-bladed craft. The process to become a tutor for the new Level 1 and Level 2 coaching courses is explained on this page.

Just complete this star award assessor registration form and return to the Canoe Wales office with any evidence of awards / first aid as required.

An A1* assessor could also provide the old 4 star award for the discipline concerned. The old 4 star was a personal performance only award, held on grade 2 white water or a similar level of moderate conditions for sea and surf and could be assessed on one day by one assessor. The new 4 Star Leader award involves a compulsory two-day training course and a two-day assessment, which requires two assessors. This is because the award qualifies paddlers to lead groups in moderate water conditions and as such, it is vital that high standards are maintained. The old 4 star bares more in common with the new 3 star award than the 4 Star Leader award, and as a BCU Level 3 coach or higher, you are able to assess the new 3 star, just by completing the Star Award Assessor Registration Form. If you hold a 5 star in the relevant discipline, you can apply for a logbook to become a new 4 Star Leader provider – click here for more information.
