Afon Corrwg

Nearby Rivers: Swansea Area - Tawe, Neath, Afan and Ogmore

Map:

170 Vale of Glamorgan & Rhondda

Grade:

II to III; rapid grade III to IV above town

Length:

5 km

Access:

A4107 Port Talbot to Treorchy road

Notes:

an alternative run to the upper Afan

Quality:

Though I have driven up the Corrwg valley a few times and inspected the river, I have never run it. Locals recommend it as a good alternative to the upper Afan.

Glyncorrwg to Cymmer

5 km of grade II to III, with one rapid of IV

Take the small road from Cymmer over the Afan and up to Glyncorrwg. Turn off right before the road bridge in town and follow the main left hand fork for a few hundred metres. Access can be had above a long grade IV run into the town GR877993.

Care needs to be taken halfway down this, where the river is forced between two concrete blocks, through which a kayak will just squeeze. From here the river is fast grade II to III until it joins the Afan in Cymmer. Although apparently clear of obstacles, I have not done the river - so keep the eyes peeled!
