Afon Croesor Nearby Rivers: Porthmadog Area
The Croesor is a somewhat unlikely paddle, but certainly entertaining in its own way. From the gentle put-on in the village of Croesor, it reaches a point where it suddenly heads downhill at an alarming rate. Croesor to A4085 Bridge 2 km class V to VI, with possible portages
From the A4085 Beddgelert - Penrhyndeudraeth road, turn off in the village of Garreg Llanfrothen and drive up to the put-in by the river in the car park at Croesor GR631447. During, or just after, heavy rain normally gives a suitable level for this exciting class V waterfall run. The river is a rocky grade II and III for the first 500 metres or so, before entering a series of drops with deep plunge pools. Though all of these drops have been run, the last - a double high squeeze onto guarding rocks and undercuts - is best portaged. This can be inspected by walking up the footpath river right from the egress point, below the cliffs of Carreg Hyll Drem GR615431. Before paddling have a look at the knife-edged gorge of the Afon Maesgwm - again paddled, but not by me. |
