Shropshire Union Canal (Llangollen Branch)

This section runs from Horseshoe Falls on the river Dee SJ195433 for 15.5km to Chirk, where it crosses into England SJ287372. It is the only section of canal in Wales that connects to the English national canal network. There are numerous bridges and additional restrictions for canoeists. The Tunnel at Chirk SJ283379 is prohibited to all non-powered craft.

Shropshire Union Canal (Montgomery Branch)

Aberbechan SO141935 to Llanymynech SJ270213.

This section of the canal is incomplete and ends before crossing into England, though restoration of the derelict sections is beginning. It is possible to portage onto the Severn at Pool Quay, where the free navigation begins. Coed Gwilym Canal

9km of restored canal, running from Clydach SN689012 to Cilmaengwyn SN751065 along the A4067.

 

Neath Canal

The Neath Canal runs for 13.5 km from Briton ferry SS735943 to Abergarwed SN816021 along the A465 and the A474.

 

Tennant Canal

This is a 12.5 km stretch of canal from Cadoxton Juxta Neath SS756983 to Port Tennant SS679931 along the A465.

 

Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal

This is a 50km stretch of canal running from Pontypool ST292982 to Brecon SO047282. It once linked Crosskeys and Newport to Brecon, but the 28km below Pontypool is now unusable. To paddle on the canal, you need a permit from British Waterways. They have offices at Govillon Wharf (01873 830328) and at the canal terminus in Brecon.

The Ashford Tunnel SO123215 may be used by canoes, but permission is limited to groups of six or more boats and each canoeist must wear a buoyancy aid and carry a torch and whistle in the tunnel. More details on the route are available from the British Waterways website.
