Afon Clwyd

Nearby Rivers: Betws y Coed and Colwyn Bay

Grade: I
Length: 15 km
Access: A525 Denbigh to St Asaph road
Notes: few overgrowing trees/bushes
Quality:

The Clwyd is a fine salmon river and, as such, it would seem entirely reasonable to keep off it during the season!

All the locals I have met are very friendly, and I would hate to give reason for this to alter. The river runs for a good week after heavy rain during the winter season. In fact, it is best when a couple of feet below its normal banks at the suggested access point. In flood, it sets up between fences and trees and becomes an extremely dangerous flat river!

Pont Glan y Wern to St Asaph

15 km grade I; no portages

The little road from Denbigh to Waen crosses the river at GR091659. Downstream on the true left bank are some useful steps onto the public footpath which follows the river. Here access can be made.

The first five or so kilometres weaves around tight bends and, occasionally, through branches and fallen trees to the main A541 road bridge. The large farm with its beautiful ivy-covered, stone bridge that is passed en-route, is Lleweni Hall. From the A541 down, the river is less fraught with trees and becomes pleasant touring water.

There are footpaths at most of the following bridges, which allow a shorter trip should this be desired. Otherwise, pass the grand-looking Llannerch Hall and finish off at the old A525 road bridge which offers perfect egress. This can be reached by carrying straight on instead of turning sharp right to Denbigh in St Asaph  GR044748.
